In the broadest sense, 2018 was the year of “ugly clothes.” Animal prints, chunky dad sneakers….fanny packs?! This year should have been a fashion disaster, instead we’re all still here and remarkably well dressed. As the year comes to a close, let’s reminisce on this year’s biggest trends.

Animal Print

2018 was the year we were graced with the revival of animal print. We had animal print coats, shoes, bags oh my! Leopard and tiger prints have peeled themselves off the backs of tawdry, thrice divorced, aging women and onto our runways. It was all a could have ever asked for. When our favorite celebrities came out wearing prints, and looking fabulous while doing so, the trend took off. Bedecked in animal print coats, boots, and what-have-you we walk into 2019.

Dad Sneakers

When 2018 started and this trend was starting to hit the market, everybody I know was 100% against this trend. It was hard to believe that people who dared to wear these didn’t immediately have to urge to grill something and make bad puns. They’re a far cry from the minimalist “too cool for you” Stan Smith Adidas sneakers that dominated 2017, but here we are. Now as time went by, more and more brands hopped on the bandwagon and gave into this trend. By the end of this year, the people who were once completely opposed to it caved and now own a pair. I don’t see this trend going away in 2019. As clunky as they look, dad sneakers are durable, comfy as hell, and now they’re stylish! Maybe Dad was onto something? When this trend began, I was of the opinion that fanny packs should stay on the clueless tourists that wear them. I’m not gonna lie, when I first saw this I was not for this trend at all. To top it off, the word “fanny,” now means “vagina” to British people. So what convinced us silly Americans that vagina packs were a good idea? The answer? The magic of the redesign. As designers and clothing stores came out with designs that looked less Disney World and more Gucci, the fanny pack became more commonplace. Then, of course, came the celebrity endorsement. Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber definitely gave us all the inspiration we needed to try out this trend. Overall, I’m a fan and will definitely be using it much more in 2019.

Tiny Shades

Okay, I feel like this trend has been around for a WHILE. But every year, this trend gets altered and updated just in time for the following year. I know that a lot of people aren’t big on the tiny shades trend, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere. You won’t be seeing the same exact tiny shades and they may even get a little bigger, but they will be around next year. I don’t see the big glasses trend coming back just yet, let’s let the tiny shades run its course.

Biker Shorts

This was one of the most random trends this year. We can thank Kim Kardashian and her Yeezy Season 6 Campaign. Kim Kardashian was basically in biker shorts all of 2018. As someone who wears biker shorts to workout, it was pretty weird to wear it with regular clothes. But, I do have to admit that the biker shorts do have a lot of potential. Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Emily Ratajkowski did have their fun with this trend. If you think about it, the biker shorts are comfortable and you have the chance to wear it anyway you want. The biker shorts are easy to manipulate and can go with anything if you style them correctly. You can go from athleisure to casual to chic with these shorts. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.

Neon

Who do I think of when I think of this trend in 2018? Kim Kardashian West. Whether you agree or not, Kim Kardashian is an early trend setter. This year, West brought back the really bright eccentric 80s neon color palette to 2018. In Prada’s Fall 2018 Ready-to-wear collection it was evident that neon was making its way back. I’m not the biggest fan of neon, but if you can pull it off go for it. I’m not one to love really bright and bold colors, so easy to say that the neon trend was not for me. In Versace’s Pre Fall 2019 there was some neon, but can’t confirm 100% that this trend will stick around next year.

Western Influence

Who would have thought 2018 would have been the year where we actually were into the western trend? I remember when the 2018 runway collections foreshadowed this trend, but I wasn’t expecting it to take off the way it did. I was a little skeptical about this trend because before this year, western influence wasn’t really something we raved about. Had it not been for the western inspired boots this trend would not be the same, specifically the white western boots. I mean these boots were everywhere. Western style was everywhere, from fringes to denim, it looked like we were about to pick up a lasso and start wrangling some cows. This trend was prevalent in 2018, but will it be coming back next year? I don’t think so but you never know.
